Buckle Up! When you and your family go for a ride everyone “buckles-up” for safety. The same should go for your family pet. Animals should never ride loose in the car. First, small animals can crawl behind gas or brake pedals and cause the driver to have an accident. Second, in an accident, your pet could be injured or thrown from the car if they are not secured. Third, your pet will be frightened in an accident and could run away and never be seen again. Special seat belts to accommodate a dog’s size and shape are now available from most pet supply stores. If you have a dog that won’t sit in a seatbelt or a cat that won’t sit at all, then keep them secure in a portable pet carrier. After all, they are at as much risk as you in a crash.
