Cross-Cutting Research, Broad Benefits

One of the Institute's top priorities is to address the lack of animal welfare training for veterinary scientists through two landmark projects:

  • The Veterinary Student Scientist Program will fund animal welfare research for veterinary students under the watchful eye of renowned veterinary scientists.
  • The Veterinary Fellows Program will provide funding for veterinarians training to become experts in animal welfare.

These projects feed into the Institute's broader goal of exploring the human dimensions of animal welfare. By creating joint studies among veterinarians, psychologists, social workers and professionals from other disciplines, research teams will delve into complex issues that go beyond medical inquiry.

For instance:

  • What can be done to prevent seemingly senseless acts like horse abandonment – whether on a small or large scale?
  • How we better pair animals with people to prevent the euthanizing of more than three million healthy dogs and cats each year?

In addition to saving the lives of individual animals, our belief is that the sum total of knowledge from these and similar studies will inspire the building of more humane communities all-around – ones that support animals and children in a safe, loving environment.

Help advance innovative research that improves the lives of animals! Donations in any amount make a difference.
