Benefits
American Humane provides the following benefits to employees. These benefits are subject to change and should not be considered terms of employment.
Insurance benefits
Insurance benefits are available to employees working at least 30 hours per week. Employees are eligible to participate the first of the month, following 30 days of regular full-time employment. These benefits are also extended to employee spouses and domestic partners.
Employees who can provide proof of insurance coverage through their spouse or other plan will be reimbursed $100 per month, or $50 per paycheck.
Health Insurance American Humane pays a portion of the premium for employee and dependent coverage and offers a choice of two medical plans.
Life Insurance American Humane pays 100 percent of the premium for $20,000 of coverage. Employees may "buy up" for more coverage.
Vision Insurance American Humane pays a portion of the premium for employee and dependent coverage.
Dental Insurance American Humane pays a portion of the premium for employee and dependent coverage.
Short-term Disability Available to employees the first of the month following 30 days of employment. Coverage is two-thirds of weekly pay up to $1,385 per week, available for up to 13 weeks of disability. There is a 7-day waiting period. Premiums are paid by American Humane.
Long-term Disability Available to employees the first of the month after 30 days of employment and begins after 90 days of continuous disability. Coverage is two-thirds of weekly pay up to a maximum of $6,000 per month. Premiums are paid by American Humane.
Employee Assistance Program
American Humane's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides support, guidance and resources 24 hours a day, seven days a week via telephone. Face-to-face counseling is also available. This EAP service is free to employees and their family members and is safe and strictly confidential.
This employer-funded EAP program provides telephonic and web resources for the following types of issues:
- Relationships: Marital issues, personal relationships, separation or divorce, dual career challenges.
- Emotional Wellness: Stress, depression, alcohol and drugs, gambling, eating disorders, grief and loss.
- Work and Career: Career planning, workplace relationships, relocation, manager consultation, adjusting to change, coping with stress.
- Financial and Legal: Budgeting, debt recovery, home ownership, family law, consumer issues, living wills.
- Parenting and Child Care: Single parenting, child development, blended families, behavior issues, childcare reference, summer camps, education issues.
125 flexible benefit plan
American Humane offers employees the opportunity to designate a specific dollar amount to be deducted from their paychecks on a pre-tax basis to pay for unreimbursed medical expenses and/or child care expenses.
Tax-Free Transportation Program
Through payroll deduction, employees can contribute to an account that saves 25 to 40 percent on the expense of parking near their place of employment, and travel to and from work. During the year, participants may access this account for transit and parking expenses. Payments from the account are tax-free to employees.
Monthly expense limits for 2008 are $220 per month for parking and $115 per month for transit passes and commuter highway vehicles.

NOTE: Employees pay most insurance premiums on a pre-tax basis.
Leave benefits
Holidays (Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. offices may have different days due to local customs). American Humane observes 10 holidays per year:
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Presidents Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving
- Friday after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day
- One floating holiday (used at employee's discretion)
Paid Time Off
American Humane's leave policy is called Paid Time Off or PTO. PTO is the combination of vacation time, sick time, and personal time. PTO is accrued on a monthly basis. Unused PTO is paid out upon termination. Monthly accrual begins the first of the month following 30 days of employment as follows:
- One to three years: 15 hours per month
- Four to 10 years: 18 hours per month
- 10+ years: 21 hours per month
Retirement Plan
American Humane will make matching contributions equal to 50 percent of your eligible elective deferrals up to 12 percent of compensation. The matching contribution will be made on pre-tax contributions and Roth 401(k) contributions. Any match made on the Roth 401(k) contributions and the earnings on that match will be subject to income tax upon withdrawal.
- Eligibility/enrollment period: For the 403(b) and Roth 401(k): Anytime for existing employees. For new hires, eligibility will take effect on the first month after 30 days of continuous service. For the 401(a) Employer Match: After the employee completes one year of service and has worked at least 1,000 hours.
- Minimum contribution: $200 per year
- Maximum employee contribution: 100 percent of your annual salary or $15,500, whichever is less. For employees over the age of 50, there is an allowable catch up provision of $5,000 for 2008.
- American Humane contribution/match: 50 percent of employee contribution with a maximum of 12 percent of salary.
