Denver (September 2, 2009)

The American Humane Association announced today that Marie McCabe, D.V.M., vice president of the organization’s Human-Animal Bond Division, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Association for Veterinary Family Practice (AVFP). Dr. McCabe will serve on the board until 2012.

The AVFP describes itself as “an organization that brings together primary-care veterinarians in private practice and academia, faculty at veterinary schools, veterinary technicians and other hospital staff, veterinary practice managers, veterinary industry, and other individuals interested in promoting the health and well-being of companion animals through integrated, team-based, primary health care.”

The AVFP defines “veterinary family practice” as providing “pets and their owners with a comprehensive team approach to primary health care, recognizing the important role the pets play in families and communities. The concept promotes the integral function of veterinary medicine in the community, the educational system, animal-related groups, and political and social entities.” The association exists to optimize the quality of life of pets in human families and communities by advancing the essential role of primary veterinary care.
