‘Atrocious’ Abuse Avoidable
HS3 Technologies and American Humane Association Announce New Technology To Enhance Farm Animal Welfare
Denver (September 19, 2008)
Video surveillance and security company HS3 Technologies, Inc., in conjunction with the American Humane Association, is working to enhance farm animal welfare and prevent incidents such as the one reported Tuesday by AP reporter Frederic J. Frommer, who described an undercover video taken at an Iowa pig farm. In conjunction with the American Humane Certified(TM) program, which certifies participating producers' farm animals are raised humanely, HS3 has completed installations and begun beta testing surveillance systems in facilities to further ensure that food production in North America meets American Humane Certified animal welfare standards.
"HS3 is an independent video monitoring and verification company, totally committed to assisting and demonstrating to consumers that American farmers are genuinely concerned about the welfare of the animals they produce," says HS3 Technologies CEO Mark Lana. "The atrocities at the Iowa farm are alarming; we want to help show that the majority of American farmers are conscientious and offer transparency for the industry." Installation has begun in five American Humane Certified producer's transportation and production facilities for swine, chicken (broiler and layer farms) and cattle (veal and dairy). The selected producers distribute nationally and internationally, and represent some of the largest animal protein producers in the world.
The surveillance systems are specifically designed to monitor the humane treatment of animals, as well as monitor conditions and events such as temperature, air flow, feeding schedules, personnel entrances/exits and animal mobility through systems that: 1) trigger alarms when abnormalities occur, and 2) can be remotely viewed by the producer and American Humane Certified (with a password) in real time from any computer with an internet connection, thus creating a prompt alert and solution to any negative condition impacting the animals.
