American Humane Testifies for Reauthorization & Expansion of Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, Plus Increased Use of ‘Differential Response’ and Other Approaches - In testimony today before the U.S. House Committee on Education and Labor’s Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities, Caren Kaplan, MSW, director of child protection reform for the American Humane Association, strongly urged Congress to reauthorize and increase funding for the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), the landmark 1974 legislation that addresses child abuse and neglect. The hearing was titled “Preventing Child Abuse and Improving Responses to Families in Crisis.” read more

Toolkits Available to Child Welfare Workers to Better Handle Immigration-Related Issues - Two innovative child welfare toolkits — A Social Worker’s Tool Kit for Working With Immigrant Families — A Child Welfare Flowchart (August 2009) and A Social Worker’s Tool Kit for Working with Immigrant Families — Immigration Status and Relief Options (June 2009) — are now available to public and private child protection services (CPS) workers, attorneys, immigration workers and legal aides who assist with child welfare-related cases. These toolkits were created to increase workers’ knowledge and skills relative to immigration-related issues that may impact their ability to assist immigrant families when they come to the attention of CPS. read more

American Humane Gives Emergency Grant to Texas Animal Shelter Devastated By Fire - After a devastating fire at Centex Humane Society’s Second Chance Animal Shelter in Killeen, Texas, the American Humane Association is helping provide care for the surviving animals by providing the shelter with an emergency $1,000 grant from its Animal Protection Division. The fire has drawn much community support and many volunteers to the shelter, but the shelter’s main need at the moment is money. read more

American Humane Association Assists in Memphis Animal Shelter Investigation - The Shelby County, Tenn., Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant this morning as part of an investigation into alleged animal abuse and cruelty at the City of Memphis Animal Shelter, where American Humane’s Red Star Animal Emergency Services™ team is currently helping care for pets. The Shelby County District Attorney had requested earlier this month that the Sheriff’s Office investigate after receiving a tip from a citizen concerned about the conditions at the shelter. read more

132nd Anniversary Nears for American Humane Association - One-hundred thirty-two years ago this coming Friday (on Oct. 9, 1877), children were often toiling at hard labor in filthy sweatshops instead of going to school, and when they could play, they were forced into the bustling streets or garbage-strewn alleys instead of onto safe playgrounds. Work horses – often beaten mercilessly and nearly starved or dehydrated – were forced to work 20-hour days. “Pet” dogs and cats didn’t fare much better, and livestock handling was brutal. read more

U.S. Supreme Court Should Uphold Federal Law Prohibiting Depictions of Actual Cruelty to Animals for Commercial Gain - The American Humane Association strongly supports the federal government’s position prohibiting videos, photographs and other depictions of acts of cruelty to animals for commercial gain.
