American Humane Association seeks a talented, experienced research leader to serve as Vice President of our Children's Innovation Institute. This position is based at our national headquarters in Washington DC and reports to the Chief Research Officer/Sr. VP Humane Science and Policy.

Role Expectations:

The Vice President, Children’s Innovation Institute, works closely with the Chief Research Officer & Sr. VP, Humane Science and Policy, as well as the President & CEO and Board of Directors to develop the research agenda for the American Humane Association Children’s Innovation Institute, identifying and implementing research opportunities which advance welfare, wellness and well-being of animals and children, and promoting understanding of the human-animal bond. Serving as principal investigator on innovative research projects, the Vice President, Children’s Innovation Institute recruits and leads research teams, establishes relationships with national thought leaders and develops a network of key stakeholders, partners and funders. Responsibilities include creating and marketing research concepts, preparing proposals, negotiating contracts and agreements, ensuring deliverables are met in a timely manner, developing publications, and maintaining contact with key networks of constituents.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads and oversees research projects as principal investigator
  • Works collaboratively with the research team and internal/external partners to develop and present research proposals for funding that align with the mission and strategic direction of the Association
  • Translates behavioral science research into practice
  • Works with the research team to disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, presentations at scientific and community meetings, conferences and other venues
  • Provides consultation, review or co-investigator collaboration on American Humane Association colleagues' projects and studies
  • Stays current in areas of research interest, latest methods and evidence related to behavioral research; reviews relevant literature and educates others
  • Maintains knowledge of standard operating procedures for research; performs research in accordance with HIPAA and applicable regulatory requirements/institutional review board (IRB) standards related to human research participants
  • Advances the Association’s strategic plan, mission and goals as member of senior management
  • Supervises, supports and mentors staff of the Children’s Innovation Institute, investing time and effort in their professional development
  • Engages in regular, active communication with all members of the research team in all locations
  • Performs direct analytic work for specific projects, including data preparation and construction
  • Responsible for financial management, conceptualization of new initiatives, creative problem solving, direction and strategic planning, and ongoing development of organizational infrastructure
  • Represents the Association by serving on relevant national boards and advisory committees
  • Seeks out and builds business opportunities for American Humane Association through national networks of partners and thought leaders in public and private foundations and universities, as well as public health entities
  • Works collaboratively with the research team to conceptualize project design, prepare written proposals and reports, and present oral briefings/presentations to potential funders and partners
  • Determines study designs to ensure scientific validity and rigor
  • Contributes to product development and review for specific projects
  • Negotiates and prepares project budgets and contracts; responsible for ongoing financial management of project budgets
  • Manages monthly project billings for program areas including federal grant progress billings and fee for service billings

Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • MD or PhD in human services, public health or relevant medical field
  • At least ten years of progressively responsible, relevant experience supervising the activities of professionals performing research
  • Experience managing IRBs and ensuring compliance with IRB standards
  • Policy development work in a non-profit organization focused on the health and well-being of children desirable
  • Background/interest in science and policy as well as health and welfare of children and animals
  • Expertise in research design, quantitative and qualitative evaluation methodology
  • Strong proposal/report writing and presentation skills
  • Expertise in the principles and practices associated with research methods and statistical analysis performed in the area of children’s health and child/family well-being
  • Strong desire and commitment to advance the welfare, wellness and well-being of children and animals
  • Familiarity with governmental and non-governmental agencies involved with conducting studies and collecting information pertaining to children
  • Adept at using Microsoft Suite products, including: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Effective public speaking and presentation techniques
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, as well as listening
  • Ability to perform and communicate statistical calculations and analyses
  • Excellent supervisory and team-building skills

Physical demands and work environment:

Periodic travel, up to 30%
