Chief Philanthropy Officer


American Humane Association is conducting a national search for a Chief Philanthropy Officer to lead its Philanthropic Services & Marketing team.  This position is based at American Humane Association’s national headquarters in Washington, DC and reports directly to the President & CEO.

Position summary:  
The Chief Philanthropy Officer provides leadership for the Philanthropic Services & Marketing team, working collaboratively with the President & CEO as well as internal and external partners.  Accountable for setting and achieving philanthropic and marketing goals, the Chief Philanthropy Officer manages and oversees capital campaigns and the diversified work of the Philanthropic Services & Marketing team responsible for: direct mail, planned giving, corporate, foundation and individual donor relations, donor operations, website, social media, marketing tools, e-philanthropy, events and membership.

Role expectations:

  • Accountable for establishing and reaching financial goals for capital campaigns, events and other fund raising initiatives
  • Knowledgeable and articulate in communicating how American Humane Association and individual programs serve children and animals, and help to build healthy, humane communities
  • Effectively leading and coaching others in achieving financial goals and meeting performance standards


Responsibilities:

  • Provide effective leadership and support to staff, volunteers and Board members in multiple locations to help them achieve desired outcomes and philanthropic goals
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships and facilitate communication between internal staff and external constituents
  • Coach others in effective solicitation and marketing strategies and hold them accountable for results
  • Support and evaluate the Philanthropic Services & Marketing team to achieve departmental and individual goals; performance goals will be set jointly by staff and leadership and will be based on a number of factors, including quantity, quality and outcomes of: face to face visits, calls, proposals submitted, gifts closed, etc.
  • Maintain and build productive and collegial relationships with professional, legal, tax and financial advisors, corporations, staff and high net worth individuals
  • Develop and implement outreach plans to introduce American Humane Association programs and services to new audiences and partners
  • Work with corporations, individuals and families to identify and execute appropriate philanthropic planning strategies
  • Directly solicit individuals and corporate partners
  • Work with Philanthropic Services & Marketing team to develop collateral materials
  • Develop donor engagement activities such as youth philanthropy, special events and donor recognition strategies
  • Deliver articulate presentations on American Humane Association’s mission, programs and services, with versions suitable for various audiences
  • Keep current on latest trends and issues in philanthropy and marketing
  • Represent American Humane Association at various events and meetings
  • Assist in new business development for asset management and fiduciary services across a broad spectrum including: individuals and families; private and corporate foundations; donor advised funds; and public charity endowments
  • Maintain a strong professional and community network and broad understanding of the target market community to build and maintain relationships with donors, corporate sponsors and prospects
  • Build rapport and provide assistance to high-profile external constituents as well as internal staff


Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Master’s degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 10 years of related leadership experience in fundraising and marketing
  • Demonstrated success in personal solicitation and acquisition of major gifts, as well as leading teams in meeting philanthropic goals through effective, diversified fundraising and marketing approaches and strategies, including: interactive media and social networking, direct mail, direct solicitation, special events and planned giving
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Conducts oneself in a highly professional manner
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling and securing confidential information  
  • Flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; self-directed to take action and resolve issues
  • Understands organizational structure and works through administrative systems; asks questions and takes initiative to facilitate work being completed
  • Makes appropriate decisions or choices based on understanding alternative courses of action and potential repercussions
  • Excellent listener, client-focused and enthusiastic about embracing and effectively communicating American Humane Association’s mission and vision
  • Expertise in effective use of marketing tools and strategies related to charitable and planned giving
  • Demonstrated strong research and analytical skills; ability to investigate an issue, ask thoughtful questions and recommend possible solutions.  
  • Applies a logical approach to addressing problems by drawing on own knowledge and experience or by seeking other references or resources as appropriate
  • Self-disciplined, action-oriented style that thrives in a start-up environment
  • Prioritizes and effectively delegates tasks to meet deadlines; strong work ethic
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to establish and implement systems and identify resources to ensure the successful completion of projects

Physical demands and work environment:  

Periodic travel required, up to 25%
