American Humane Association seeks a talented Senior Accountant/Grants Manager to be based at our national headquarters in Washington, DC, reporting to the Controller.

Role Expectations:

The Senior Accountant/Grants Manager facilitates process improvement and strategic solutions for financial reporting and analysis throughout American Humane Association.  With the Controller, the Senior Accountant/Grants Manager ensures that all regulatory and audit requirements are met and helps to implement and maintain an environment of sound internal controls.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate monthly project billings for program areas including federal grant progress billings and fee for service billings.
  • Monitor and manage project budgets (federal/state funding) and produce monthly budget-to-actual reports for project managers.
  • Prepare and file quarterly federal financial reports.
  • Manage accounts receivable functions including posting of receipts.
  • Prepare monthly general journal entries. Assist in preparation, review and distribution of monthly financial statements.
  • Help staff with accounting questions and software training including Microsoft Dynamics SL, TargIT, Raiser's Edge and Business Portal (used for travel and expense reports).
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and fund balances on monthly basis and at year-end for external audit purposes.
  • Assist in preparation of annual financial audit schedules
  • Assist with annual budget preparation and periodic variance analysis reports. Maintain the general ledger and related subsidiary ledgers including accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets and depreciation.
  • Work closely with Philanthropic Services, Shared Services, Administration and all program areas to ensure accounting records are properly stated; research discrepancies in financial statements and work with program/project managers to resolve errors.
  • Assist in the determination and recording of restricted, temporarily restricted, unrestricted and deferred revenues. Provide analysis and input to support the release of temporarily restricted revenues.

Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. CPA candidate preferred.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible non-profit accounting work experience.
  • Federal contract management experience in a non-profit organization.
  • Experience with non-profit fund raising accounting principles, practices and procedures.
  • In-depth and up-to-date knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, practices and procedures.
  • Strong analytical and strategic skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Dynamics SL (Solomon) and Excel.
  • Knowledge of TargIT and Raiser's Edge preferred but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
